–       Grew up in Chicago, which has had many influences on his food

–       Developed strong knife skills as a former butcher

–       Not working in an ideal kitchen but his current job pays better

–       Wants to be on the show to prove to his wife and kids he can do it and to give them a better life

–       Had a rough childhood and was victim of gunshot wound at age 17

–       Been cooking for about 15 years but finally went to school in his early 30s to change his life around
